IRONWELD Triple Shaved 5356 Aluminium TIG Wire | 5kg
Precision triple shaved 5356 aluminium magnesium TIG rod, built for structural and marine-grade aluminium fabrication. This alloy carries around 5% magnesium as its major alloying element, giving it strong corrosion resistance in wet and marine environments, which is why 5356 is often referred to in the trade as "marine grade" filler wire.
Why triple shaved matters:
Aluminium naturally forms a tough oxide layer on its surface almost immediately after drawing, and that oxide interferes with arc stability and feeding if it isn't removed. Triple shaving is a mechanical process that skims the wire surface three times to strip that oxide layer and leave a clean, consistent finish. The practical benefit shows up at the torch: smoother, more consistent wire feeding through the liner, fewer arc starting issues, and a cleaner puddle since there's less oxide contamination burning into the weld. For TIG welders running this by hand, it also means less oxide flaking or smut on the rod itself.
Application:
5356 is the general-purpose go-to for welding 5000 series aluminium (5052, 5083, 5086, 5456) and is also commonly used across 3000 and 6000 series fabrication work. It's the standard filler for truck and trailer bodies, small boats and marine fabrication, tanks, and general aluminium structural work. One limitation worth flagging to trade customers: 5356 isn't recommended for continuous service above around 65°C, since sustained heat in high-magnesium weld deposits can increase susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking, so it's not the right call for elevated-temperature service applications.
